The Be Made New scripted banner is handcrafted from cotton duck cloth and highlights the Ephesians 4:22-24 passage.
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
The passage serves as a formative truth in my life when I realized the verb tense usage makes clear what my part in personal spiritual formation is, and what God does as well. The active tense verbs, put off and put on, speak to the individual’s behavior of 1) turning from sin, and 2) putting on the nature of God, which I understand to mean cooperating with his Holy Spirit, who equips God’s child with strength to walk in this new nature. The be made new expression is emphasized on the banner as all the ability for our expression of God’s nature (true righteousness and holiness) is only possible by having been made new. We don’t make ourselves new- it’s a passive tense verb, meaning it happens to us. What wonderful freedom in not having to strive to become something we simply have no ability to do in and of ourselves. You must be born again. You must be made new in the attitude of your mind.
